Runa Islam Biography

Runa Islam, born on December 10, 1970, in Dhaka, East Bengal (now Bangladesh), is a distinguished British visual artist and filmmaker renowned for her profound and evocative film works. Islam's journey from Dhaka to becoming a pivotal figure in contemporary art is marked by her early relocation to London at the age of three, a move that set the stage for her future explorations in art and film. Her educational path led her to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1997 to 1998, a period that was crucial for her artistic development. Further honing her skills and theoretical understanding, Islam completed a M.Phil at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2004, solidifying her foundation in the arts. Islam's work is deeply influenced by European auteurs such as Jean-Luc Godard, whose innovative approaches to cinema have left a lasting impact on her artistic vision. Her films and installations are known for their ability to excavate and reveal the multifaceted language of film, often focusing on its seductive qualities that are typically obscured. Islam's artistry is characterized by a keen interest in the mechanics of film and its potential to re-articulate time and space, allowing for a cinematic exploration of memory, perception, and the ephemeral nature of human experience. One of Islam's notable works, "Rapid Eye Movement" (2002), premiered in the U.S. at the MIT List Visual Arts Center in 2003. This short film takes the concept of film as a form of collective dreaming as its starting point, embarking on a cinematic adventure that delves into the luscious and often elusive qualities of filmic language. Her work has been generously supported by institutions such as the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Council for the Arts at MIT, with special thanks to the British Consulate-General, Boston, Massachusetts. Islam's career is marked by significant exhibitions and contributions to the art world. In 2005, she participated in the Venice Biennale, showcasing her ability to engage with international audiences and contexts. Her 2006 16mm film installation "Conditional Probability" emerged from a residency at North Westminster Community School, capturing the visual magic of mundane spaces and moments. This work, along with others, was exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery, highlighting Islam's unique approach to documenting and transforming everyday experiences into art. In 2010, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (MCA), presented Islam's first solo exhibition in Australia, featuring works such as "Magical Consciousness" (2010) and "Scale (1/16 Inch = 1 Foot)," which focused on the now-demolished Trinity Square multi-storey car park. Islam's exploration of film as a medium extends beyond its visual aspects, engaging with contemporary life and the ways in which film and television shape our memories and perceptions of people and events. Islam's contributions to the field of visual arts have been recognized through various awards and nominations, including a nomination for the prestigious 2008 Turner Prize. Her work continues to inspire and challenge audiences, offering new perspectives on the intersections between film, art, and human experience. Through her films and installations, Runa Islam invites viewers into a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred, where the fleeting moments of life are captured and transformed into enduring works of art.
